Catalog

The category tree

Open a category for editing and the whole tree appears beside the form. Click any name to open that category. Use the arrow beside a name to show or hide its children.

Two buttons sit at the top of the tree. Root Category creates a new top-level category. Subcategory creates one inside the category you have open, and is only there when a category is open.

Moving categories

Dragging is switched off until you ask for it, so nothing moves by accident.

  1. Click Reorder at the top right of the tree. Drag handles appear beside each name.
  2. Drag a category up or down inside its group, or into a different parent. A category carries its subcategories with it.
  3. Click Save order.

Nothing reaches the database until you press Save order. While you have unsaved moves an amber banner appears above the tree, clicking another category is blocked, and leaving the page raises the browser's own warning.

If you moved anything to a new parent, a confirmation lists the moves before saving, because re-parenting changes those categories' storefront addresses. Plain reordering inside one parent saves without asking.

Cancel throws away everything from that sort session and reloads the tree. If you turned sort mode on but dragged nothing, the button reads Exit instead and simply leaves sort mode.

Two moves are refused on purpose. You cannot drag a category up to the root level, and you cannot drag a category into one of its own subcategories. A refused drop snaps back with a short message.

Tree changes and form changes are independent. Saving the order does not touch the fields you have edited, and saving the form does not move anything.

Choosing the category layout

Category View Type in Configuration under Nebula, Nebula Admin Theme, Settings decides how the category screen is arranged.

Option What you get
Standard The tree in a sidebar beside the form
Refreshed The tree behind a drawer, with the form in full-width tabs
Unified The tree behind a drawer, with sections across the top and tabs below
Tabbed Sidebar The tree in a sidebar on a desktop and behind a drawer on a phone

Products in a category

The Products in Category panel on the category form lists what is assigned, with a filter box, a page size and an Add products search.

Two things about it are worth knowing. Adding and removing here save immediately and on their own. They are not part of the category's Save button, so there is nothing to press afterwards, and removing asks you to confirm because the category's Cancel button will not put the product back. And reordering does not happen here; use the merchandiser.

If the panel says the merchandiser is switched off, the list is read-only. Turn it on under Stores, Configuration, Nebula, Category Merchandiser.

The category merchandiser

Press Open merchandiser from the Products in Category panel. The page shows the category's products as cards you can drag into the order you want.

Control What it does
Drag a card Moves that product within the page you are looking at
The number box on a card The card's place on the page you are looking at, not its stored position number. Type a new place and press Tab or Enter; the card jumps there and the rest close up
The ↑ and ↓ on a card Moves that product one place, the same as Ctrl+Up and Ctrl+Down. Greyed out at the top and bottom of the page
Ctrl+Up Ctrl+Down Moves the focused card one place
The ✕ on a card Takes that product out of the category. It is not deleted, only unassigned. Nothing is written until you press Save order, and Undo puts it back
Undo, Redo Steps back and forward through your changes. Ctrl+Z and Ctrl+Y do the same
Discard Throws away everything you have moved, added or removed since the last save
Save order Writes the moves, the additions and the removals together
Columns How many cards fit across the grid
Per page How many products a page holds, up to 100
Order by, Apply Applies an ordering strategy to the whole category
Renumber Rewrites the positions as a clean 1, 2, 3 sequence
Add products Searches the catalogue and stages what you pick. It is assigned when you press Save order
Back to category Returns to the category form, asking first if you have unsaved changes

Everything you do on this page is held until you press Save order. Dragging, typing a position, adding and removing all stage a change and write nothing on their own. Undo, Redo and Discard cover all of them, and leaving the page asks first. The line under the category name counts what is waiting, in the form 2 moved, 1 added, 0 removed.

This is the opposite of the Products in Category panel on the category form. Removing a product there asks you to confirm and then writes straight away, and the category's own Cancel button will not put it back. The ✕ on a merchandiser card asks nothing and writes nothing until you save.

A card may carry chips: Disabled, Not visible, Out of stock, and, for a Configurable, Bundle, Grouped, Virtual or Downloadable product, a chip naming the type. They are why a product you have placed at position 1 may still not be the first thing a shopper sees. A simple, enabled, visible, in-stock product carries no chips at all.

Cards can only be dragged within the page you are looking at. You cannot drag a product from page three to page one. The number box and the ↑ and ↓ buttons have the same limit. Raising Per page and using Renumber are how you work around that: Renumber compacts the whole category, not just the visible page, which makes the numbering predictable before you start.

Order by offers one strategy, Manual, which leaves the order alone. Automated strategies such as bestsellers are part of Nebula Pro.

Renumber, and Apply with the Manual strategy, first save whatever you have dragged and then renumber it, so the order on screen is the order that is kept. If that save fails, the renumber is abandoned and the message tells you why.

Two warnings can appear above the grid, and both are worth reading.

  • The category sorts by something other than Position, so the order you set is only shown to a shopper who chooses Position.
  • The category does not offer Position as a sort option at all, so the order can never be shown. Add Position to the category's available sort options.

After saving you may see a note about the storefront. The save is written immediately, but the storefront listing catches up when the index next runs.

The product list

The product list behaves like every other list. See Working with lists.

Two things are specific to it:

  • Add Product offers a type: Simple, Configurable, Virtual, Grouped, Bundle or Downloadable.
  • The Categories column filters through a search box rather than a dropdown. Type part of a category name and pick from the matches. A store with thousands of categories would make a dropdown unusable.

Clicking a row opens the full product page.

The product edit screen

By default the product screen is one long form. Product Details, Pricing and Inventory run down a wide main column, with Categories and Websites in a narrower sidebar beside them. Media and Content sit side by side below that. SEO, Related, Design and Custom Options sit in a tab strip at the foot of the page.

Panel What you do there
Product Details Name, SKU, status, visibility, weight, country of manufacture and the Set Product as New dates
Pricing Price, cost, MSRP and tax class, with Special Price and Tier Prices underneath
Inventory Quantity, a Stock Status of In Stock or Out of Stock, and an Advanced Inventory sub-panel
Configurable Variations The variations table, and the wizard that picks the attributes and generates the child products
Bundle Items The bundle's options, each with a title, an input type, Is Required and rows of products
Bundle Settings SKU type, weight type and shipment type
Categories A tree. Tick the categories this product belongs to
Websites A checkbox per website it is sold on
Media Images, their order, their alt text and their storefront roles
Content Description and short description, both in the editor
SEO URL key, meta title, meta keywords, meta description, the indexing toggles and a live Google Preview
Related Related, Upsell and Cross-sell products
Design Design fields and a scheduled design update
Custom Options Options a shopper picks when buying this product

Which panels appear depends on the product type. Simple, virtual and downloadable products get Pricing and Inventory. A configurable product gets Configurable Variations and Inventory but no Pricing, because its children carry the price. A bundle product gets Pricing, Bundle Items and Bundle Settings but no Inventory panel, and setting Dynamic Price on it disables the price and tax class fields.

Each field in Advanced Inventory has a Use Config switch beside it. Turn that off to set Manage Stock, Out-of-Stock Threshold, Min Qty in Cart, Max Qty in Cart, Backorders, Notify Below Qty or Qty Increments for this product alone.

In Media, drop image files onto the panel or press browse to pick them. Drag a row to change the order. Type alt text in the box on the row. The Visible and Hidden switch takes an image off the storefront without deleting it, and the bin button removes it. The Base, Small, Thumb and Swatch radios decide which image each storefront role uses.

Turning on Enable Product Edit Tabs in Configuration under Nebula, Nebula Admin Theme, Settings regroups the same panels rather than simply stacking them. General holds Product Details, Categories and Websites. Content holds Content, Media and Design. Commerce holds Pricing, Inventory, the type-specific panels, Custom Options and the three product-relation lists. SEO keeps its fields and the preview. Attributes gathers every attribute-set group no other tab claimed, and Advanced is left empty for extensions to add to.

Some fields may be missing from the form. That is your role: an attribute can be protected by a permission, and if your role does not hold it the field is not shown to you and cannot be changed by you through any route, including import.

Attribute sets

Stores, Attribute Set opens the set editor: the groups down the middle, the attributes inside each group, and the unassigned attributes to one side.

Drag an attribute from the unassigned list into a group to add it. Drag it back out to remove it. Drag a group by its handle to reorder the groups. Search the unassigned list to find an attribute quickly.

Add group asks for a name and refuses a name that is already in use. Rename a group by typing in its name field. Deleting a group asks first and warns that its attributes go back to Unassigned. A group holding system attributes cannot be deleted at all, and the editor says so rather than letting you try.

Nothing is written until you press Save.
